The Stats

The Problem

Child protection is a global issue that is imperative to address. Because of alarming statistics, child protection was specifically added to the 2030 Sustainable Development Goals (SDG). Our programs seek to follow the model set by SDG 16.2, which aims to “end all forms of violence against children gives renewed impetus towards the realization of the right of every child to live free from fear, neglect, abuse and exploitation.” Child protection remains a huge concern in Cambodia due to the limited national capacity to provide services required to ensure child protection on a large scale.

Ways We Help

Prevention

ChildSafe Movement

The ChildSafe Movement was created by Friends-International in 2005 which works to prevent street living and street working children and youth from falling victim to all forms of abuse. The ChildSafe Movement is part of the 3PC (the Partnership Program for the Protection of Children) agenda also run by Friends-International. 3PC aims to create a national Child Protection Policy for Cambodia and coordinates social work services around the country.

Damnok Toek is one of the leading organisations of the 3PC ChildSafe network, which trains ChildSafe Agents who are local members of the community (tuk-tuk drivers, market vendors, teachers, etc.) in child protection so they are able to identify unsafe situations. From there they can intervene or call the ChildSafe hotline that is 24/7 and nationwide to report the situation for further intervention from the authorities or a trained 3PC member organisation.

Protection

Child protection is at the heart of everything we do. All of our staff and any collaborating members must pass background checks to ensure they abide by our child protection policy. Any venue, vacation, or event that we bring children to is first inspected and approved by staff members.

Our team regularly conduct Skillful Parenting Workshops, which provide education to parents about safe migration practices, the impact of substance abuse, how to identify exploitative situations, and child protection.

Rehabilitation

Drop-In Centre (DIC)

The DIC is a critical project based in a slum area of Poipet and is open to all community members. Children and youth are able to access the centre to receive a cooked meal, take a shower, and have a safe place to sleep every night. The DIC includes a variety of projects targeted to reach the community to improve their livelihoods through community outreach.

Mobile Rehabilitation

Damnok Toek’s team of social workers identifies street-involved children and youth either using drugs or at-risk of taking drugs and educates them about the services available to them through the DIC. Our team also uses sports, such as football, as a motivating tool in reducing drug and alcohol abuse.

Mobile Library

This service provides bi-weekly awareness-raising sessions on the importance of education, the risks and consequences of child trafficking and unsafe migration as well as gender-based violence in the communities.

Medical Clinic

Here, we focus on reducing child malnutrition and child mortality by providing milk powder to mothers and families who are unable to breastfeed their children. The project also educates children and youth about sexual and reproductive health which is typically a taboo topic in Cambodia.

Reintegration

Future's Office

This program seeks to address the gaps in employment and vocational training within the Poipet area to mitigate the risk of human trafficking or exploitation. The office accepts both walk-in clients and those referred through Damnok Toek’s other projects.

Our Vocational Training and Job Placement Program is one of the main components of our reintegration strategy for young adults from our Residential Centres who preferred to work over continuing their higher education. This program provides job skills training and the opportunity for students to follow an apprenticeship at a local business, which gives them the means and experience to become financially independent.

We understand that for children to be protected, it is important that their parents have access to a steady and legitimate source of income. Therefore we also offer Income Generating Activities (IGA), which provide business classes and financial start-up support to adults interested in opening a small business.
